Starting with his parent’s record collection, Mike would spend countless hours listening to everything from reggae, to free jazz, to rock and fusion. He began playing piano at the age of 8 and by the age of fifteen had added clarinet, trombone, guitar, voice and saxophone to his repertoire. Mike played in various bands in high school before moving to Toronto and enrolling in the Jazz Performance program at Humber College.
